Interview with Joseph Stalin

"How did tensions between you and the United States begin?"

Stalin: "Tensions have been around since the start of the Bolshevik reign. Those Americans are very prideful when it comes to regards of their 'great' democracy."

"How did the actions of your top officials lead to their exiles (Trotsky, etc.)?"

Stalin: "Several of my party's high ranking officials such as Trotsky have turned against the party and the socialist cause it stands for. These actions eventually led to their exile from the Soviet Union as should be done when one betrays his country."

"What is your opinion on democracy?"

Stalin: "Democracy embodies true evil in the world. All those who advocate for or willing allow democracy to spread are committing a sin to themselves and those around them."

"It has been noted that the Soviet Union has a plethora of military-ready nuclear warheads. Do you plan on using these weapons in the approaching future?"

Stalin: "If ever an aggressor were to strike against the Soviet Union or its associated states, affirmative actions will be taken upon the aggressor whether they be nuclear or non. No attack on socialism will remain unscathed."

"What is your opinion on Eisenhower and the other leaders of the Western bloc?"

Stalin: "The United States and its allies appear strong on the outside, but upon further examination many flaws can be brought out. Even in acknowledging that fact, the cause that us Soviet's back is much stronger than that of the Americans. Despite one's leaders, the cause that is just will always prevail."

"Many speculators see the treatment in the gulags as violating ethics and human rights. What is your opinion on the role of these gulags?"

Stalin: "The Gulags were formulated to control and punish violators of the law. The goal of these camps to rehabilitate criminals through a productive work-intensive manner that will both benefit them and the state. "

"How have the Five-Year Plans been progressing?"

Stalin: "The Five-Year Plans are crucial in providing infrastructure and stability to the Soviet Union. The plans are on track and should provide an industrialized society to the Soviet Union shortly."

"What is your opinion of the battles occurring in Vietnam?"

Stalin: "The Vietnam War is a small-scaled representation of the battle between democracy and communism. As seen in Vietnam, communism once again has prevailed, destroying the effortless attempts by the US and Western Bloc."

"Many reports have left the Soviet Union speaking of an undercover police squad falsely arresting conspirators of the state. Are these rumors true?"

Stalin: "These rumors are absolutely false. These supposed secret police is known as the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs and contrary to this hearsay does not falsely convict the innocent of conspiracy or other charges. These are mere rumors told by the West to sabotage communism and its obvious superiority."

"Many people view you as a ruler who commands with an iron fist. What are your thoughts on these accusations?"

Stalin: "I do not suppose myself to rule with an iron fist but merely an acute response. My rule is not for my own personal gain but for the gains of my fellow Soviet comrads. Everything I carry out is for my socialist brethren and our cause."

Hungarian Revolution

As the Soviets marched into Hungary after the removal of the Hungarian leader panic was brought upon the Hungarians throughout their country. Soviets marched in there with no mercy arresting and killing thousands of innocent Hungarians ripping them from their everyday lives. The Soviets did this out of force killing and making Hungarians join their side because the soviets knew the Hungarians had no one to help them. This relates to the Crucible because just like the Hungarians, innocent people in the Crucible were ripped away from their everyday lives because they were being accused of something that was untrue. In the Crucible the court is acting like Soviets through power “a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between” (Miller 1142). This ties back to how the Hungarians had a choice either to join the Soviet army or be killed in battle by the Soviets. This did not leave many Hungarians a choice at all. “Now we cannot hope the witch will accuse herself; granted? Therefore, we must rely upon her victims - and they do testify, the children certainly do testify” (Miller 1144). This relates to how innocent children were being accused of witchcraft and being sentenced to death just like how the Hungarians were being killed for not joining the soviets side. This was wrong for the Soviets to come into a peaceful country where the locals did nothing wrong and enslaving them into their Soviet army.

Cold War Time Line
February 4-11, 1945: The Cold War Begins do to the Yalta Conference.  Decisions made at the conference angered the Soviets and Stalin because most of the decisions favored the United States And England.

August 6th, 1945: The United States uses the first ever Atomic Bomb on Japan. The power of the bomb proves to be devastating and increases the nuclear arms raise between the U.S and The Soviet Union.

August 14th, 1945: Japan surrenders marking the end of WW2.  This ultimately ends the short lived "alliance" between the U.S and Soviet Union.

September 1949: Russia drops their first atomic bomb.  This signifies nuclear advancement and now the possibility of a nuclear war between the U.S and Russia.

February 1950: Senator Joe McCarthy starts a communist hunt in the U.S similar to the witch hunts in Salem.  People were falsely accused  of being communist and many were wither jailed or disappeared for ending accusations.

October 4th, 1957: The first satellite ever is launched in to space by the Soviets.  The satellite cause panic in the U.S because Russia now had space control with Sputnik.

November 1960: John F. Kennedy is elected president who is possibly the most popular president in American History.  However, within his presidency nuclear war almost occurred because of the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis.

November 1985: A new leader named Gorbachev is elected to lead the Soviet Union.  He eventually cuts all aid to the Satellite research economically.

December 1989: Communism fails in Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Rumania.

August 1991:  Marks the end the Cold War.

Interview with John Proctor

"Was the affair between you and Abigail the truth?'
Proctor: "Unfortunately, to say the least.  When the chaos occurred I was in a dark state and did not mean for my actions to get carried off unto that level.  I regret my decision daily and do not find a moment where I could take my actions against my loving wife back."

"What do you believe is your role in the start of the trials?"
Proctor: "I do hold myself partially accountable for the beginning of the witch hunts.  If my affair with Abigail had not altered her fragile mind-state I do not believe this issue would have gotten so far out of hand."

"Has your opinion of certain members of your Salem community altered since the start of the witch hunt?"
Proctor: "Most definitely.  In times of crisis the most ludicrous of persons are given the opportunity to rise into power.  In our case the issue was inevitable with so many ignorant in Salem."

"How have your and Abigail's relations progressed after the trials ends?"
Proctor: "After I was sentenced to death by hanging, I guess you could say mine and Abigail's relations found a different result than what she previously envisioned.  To say the least, I plan on never seeing that she-devil with my naked eyes again.

"Do you suppose the art of witchcraft is real?"
Proctor: "Absolutely not.  The day Goody Williams is able to cast a spell is the same day my steer takes flight."

"If Reverend Hale had declared there to be no acts of witchcraft in Salem, do you believe the trials would have dragged on this far or even occurred in the first place?"
Proctor:  "If Reverend Hale had been more careful with his diagnosis, I do not believe that any of this bafflery would have happened.  Hale was too haste with his declaration causing for the tomfoolery we had just seen before us."

"If men like Thomas Putnam had not interfered, in your opinion, would the trials had been so malicious?"
Proctor: "If it was not for the greed of the Thomas Putnam's of this planet, the world would be a safe and completely lawful land.  When lust and greed overcome a person's being, that person is now subject to a lifetime of unruly and unjustifiable claims."

"Common hearsay says Abigail had fled Salem and moved to the city with her uncle, Rev. Parris', fortune where she now is a prostitute by profession.  What is your opinion on this?"
Proctor: "Serves them both fair.  God punishes those who sin and don't obey his commandments.  This is obviously a beautiful example of backsliding from His favor."

"Giles Corey is reported saying 'more weight' after several stones had been placed upon him already during his execution by pressing.  Do you find Corey's actions courageous?
Proctor: "I've always admired Giles and his quick wit.  Corey has always been among one of my closest companions in the town and a very loyal one among that.  Giles truly was a hero at heart; never suppressing his true emotions until the end."

"If you could voyage back in time, what actions would you change in order to alter and save the lives of your fellow neighbors in Salem and its surrounding towns?"
Proctor: "Most obviously I would have never of let the affair between myself and Abigail occur.  Second to that, I wish I could have better helped Reverend Hale realize the injustices and lies of both Abigail and the other girls.

Cold War/Cuban Missile Crisis

The Cold war began after WWII ended from a distrust between the soviets and the Americans. There were many major battles and conflicts throughout the Cold war. One major conflict that was brought upon through the Cold War was the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban Missile Crisis was found out about on 1962 from a spy plane that photographed a nuclear building site the soviets had built in Cuba. This site was only 90 miles from Florida which if any missile was launched there would have been major damage to the east coast. In order to keep the soviets from resupplying the base with military weapons Kennedy decided to set up a naval blockade around Cuba. After this had happened no one knew what the Soviets would do but Kennedy later televised the situation and it brought a shock to the people in the U.S. and people began to have the fear of a Nuclear War. This crisis lasted for thirteen days and brought panic to all of the Americans. Both the soviets and the Americans realized that having a Nuclear War would not end up well for both countries. Both sides came to an agreement after Nikita Khrushchev decided to do away with the nuclear base as long as the Americans did not terrorize Cuba. The agreement between both sides stated that if the Soviets were to follow through with getting rid of their base in Cuba the Americans must do the same with their base in Turkey. After this nuclear crisis was over tensions began to rise between both the Soviets and the Americans which later led to more battles and conflicts.

Important Cold War/Crucible Articles

Article 1:McCarthy the Witch
Throughout this suspenseful and nerve wracking Cold War, some of Americas most disgraceful and ignorant times are occurring.  Just as in Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” people are being accused of crimes and practices without the proper evidence and sense of justice.  Between 1950 and until now (1956), a mid-20th century political attitude characterized chiefly by opposition to elements held to be subversive and by the use of tactics involving personal attacks on individuals by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations especially on the basis of unsubstantiated charges has risen known as McCarthyism.[i]  Such confusion and suspicion has begun do to the communist scare in America during this Cold War.  Senator McCarthy claims how communists have infiltrated the U.S just as witches supposedly infiltrated Salem in the early days of America.   After all accusations were made, thousands of Americans are now accused of being communist infiltrators.  A large portion of these people are figures that have a persuasive role in society such as writers, actors, and politicians[ii].  The only way one could prevent from being titled as a communist is to “reveal” other communists in America[iii].  Because talking and revealing others seem to be the only way out, a domino affect has been set into motion and thousands of accusations are now underway.  The
Lottsfeldt 2
same domino effect occurred during “The Crucible”, because the only way to save oneself from being hanged was to reveal other people who had supposedly committed witchcraft.  The people refusing talk are imprisoned, losing their jobs, and being labeled as a communist.  Senator McCarthy was able to trigger this crisis through Communism and the Cold War just as Abigail did so through witchcraft.
Article 2:Society and War
There are people who wish the Cold War would come to a halt and all conflict within the war stop as well. There is a new generation of children who are different from previous generation because of the new freedom and privileges they are born into.   The children feel that this freedom allows them to act in new ways just as the children of “The Crucible” do to new technology such as televisions, reveal the realities of life to children and give them a different mindset than past generations.    A film like “Red Dawn” which is about a group of High School kids are able to fight off the Soviet invasion of the U.S provides children with a different and more aggressive outlook on life[iv].  Such technologies are brainwashing children to not necessarily support war, but dislike communists and Russians to be exact.  This is the exact same affect Abigail Williams has on the children of Salem, because she delivers an overpowering amount of fear to the point where the children follower her every command.  The fear Abigail brings is similar to the thrill children find through television because both fear and thrill drive them to be different then the previous generation[v].  However, many adults oppose the Cold War just as the ninety people in Salem who signed a doctrine conveying they believe that no witchcraft is actually taking place.   A nuclear protest is equivalent to this document in
Lottsfeldt 3
“The Crucible” because is displays opposition towards the government/court[vi].  Basically, oppositions are being made towards the government just as oppositions were made towards the court in Salem.
